Developing new tulip varieties
We develop new and innovative tulip varieties with the aim of continuously improving our range and contributing to the future of tulip production. This ambition led us to establish our own breeding programme.
Tulip breeding is a long-term process. We use strict selection of criteria, focusing not only on good forcing and growing characteristics, but also on resistance to Fusarium. The varieties must also be highly productive and provide sufficient planting material for reliable tulip production.
From crossing to a new tulip
Seedlings, grown from seeds of crossed tulips, are extensively tested in both water and potting soil. We assess characteristics such as forcing speed, leaf spacing and bud presentation.
Developing a new tulip takes considerable time. Most tulips are ready to be given a name after 10 to 15 years of development, measured from the initial cross.
